What is Houston Mental Health, and what does the facility offer?

Houston Mental Health is a private residential mental health treatment facility in Houston, Texas, serving adults aged 18 and older. We offer a connected continuum of care designed to meet patients at the level of support they need: residential mental health treatment for adults requiring 24/7 immersive clinical care; our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for structured, telehealth-based treatment accessible statewide; and our In-Person Outpatient Program (OP) for adults who benefit from consistent clinical structure while living at home. All three levels of care are delivered by a multidisciplinary clinical team and built around each patient’s personalized treatment plan.

Who does Houston Mental Health treat?

Houston Mental Health serves adult men and women aged 18 and older from Houston, the greater Houston area – including The Woodlands, Katy, Baytown, South Houston, Jersey Village, and Memorial – and across Texas. We treat a broad range of mental health conditions, including mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), trauma and PTSD, anxiety disorders, psychotic conditions, eating disorders, personality disorders, dissociative disorders, and other complex mental health presentations. Visit our What We Treat page for a full list of the conditions we address.

Is Houston Mental Health accredited?

Our clinical staff hold active licensure in the state of Texas and national certifications in their respective disciplines. If you have questions about our credentials or regulatory standing, our admissions team is happy to provide that information directly.

Does Houston Mental Health treat co-occurring substance use disorders?

Houston Mental Health does not treat co-occurring substance use disorders. If you or a loved one is dealing with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, it is important to ask about this directly during your admissions call so our clinical team can assess whether our program is the right fit or whether a facility with dual-diagnosis specialization would better serve the presenting need. Our admissions team is experienced in these conversations and will give you an honest answer.

What is the difference between residential treatment, Virtual IOP, and In-Person OP?

Residential mental health treatment is the most intensive level of care we offer. Patients live at our private Houston facility full-time and receive 24/7 clinical support, individual and group therapy, psychiatric oversight, and specialized therapeutic programming throughout each day. It is appropriate for adults whose symptoms require a structured, immersive treatment environment.

Our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) delivers structured clinical programming – group therapy, individual therapy, What is the difference between residential treatment, Virtual IOP, and In-Person OP?and evidence-based skills work – via secure telehealth. Virtual IOP is designed for adults who need more clinical support than standard weekly therapy but can manage safely and function from home. It is also the most common step-down option for patients transitioning from residential care.

Our In-Person Outpatient Program (OP) provides regular scheduled clinical sessions at our Houston facility – individual therapy, group programming, and psychiatric follow-up – on a frequency determined by the patient’s treatment plan. In-Person OP is suited to adults in a stable phase of recovery who benefit from ongoing clinical structure while living independently.

How is my level of care determined?

Level of care is determined through a comprehensive clinical assessment conducted by a licensed clinician during the admissions process. The assessment evaluates the severity and nature of your symptoms, your current level of daily functioning, your living situation and support network, your history with prior treatment, and any safety considerations. Our team recommends the level of care that is clinically appropriate for your situation – not the most intensive option by default, and not the least costly. If your needs change during treatment, your level of care can be adjusted accordingly. Visit our Admissions Process page to learn more about how this works in practice.

How long does residential treatment last?

Length of stay in our residential program is clinically determined based on your diagnosis, symptom severity, treatment progress, and discharge planning needs. There is no fixed calendar for everyone. Our clinical team reviews each patient’s status regularly and communicates transparently about progress and timeline throughout the stay. Your admissions specialist can discuss what a realistic timeline might look like for your specific situation during your initial assessment.

What therapies are available at Houston Mental Health?

Houston Mental Health offers a comprehensive range of evidence-based and experiential therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. Our experiential program includes art therapy, music therapy, yoga therapy, animal-assisted therapy, and meditation. Therapies are incorporated into each patient’s personalized treatment plan based on their diagnosis and clinical needs. Visit our Therapy Modalities page for detailed descriptions of each approach.

How do I get admitted to Houston Mental Health?

The admissions process begins with a single call to [Phone Number] or an inquiry through our Contact Us page. An admissions specialist will gather some basic information, conduct or schedule a clinical assessment, verify your insurance benefits, and walk you through the steps to placement confirmation. Same-day admissions are available for adults in urgent need. The full process is outlined step by step on our Admissions Process page.

Do I need a referral to be admitted?

No referral is required. Adults can contact Houston Mental Health directly and begin the admissions process without a referral from a physician or outpatient provider. If you are currently working with a therapist or psychiatrist, our team will typically request consent to coordinate with them as part of your clinical intake – but their referral is not a prerequisite for admission.

Can a family member initiate the admissions process on my behalf?

Yes. Family members, partners, and close friends regularly contact Houston Mental Health on behalf of someone who is struggling. Our admissions team is experienced in these conversations and will provide general program information and guidance freely. Because residential treatment is a voluntary program for adults, the individual themselves will need to participate in the clinical assessment and consent to treatment before placement is finalized. For guidance on supporting a loved one through the admissions process, visit our Family Resources page.

What should I bring when I arrive for residential treatment?

Our What to Bring page provides a complete guide to everything you need to pack for residential admission – required identification documents, medications, clothing, personal comfort items, and a clear list of what not to bring. We recommend reviewing that page in full before your arrival day. Your admissions specialist will also walk you through it during the placement confirmation step.

Does Houston Mental Health accept insurance?

Yes. Houston Mental Health accepts insurance from a wide range of major commercial providers. We verify benefits across all three levels of care – residential treatment, Virtual IOP, and In-Person OP – and manage prior authorization on behalf of our patients. To find out whether your specific plan is accepted and what your benefits include, visit our Insurance Verification page or call our admissions team directly.

How much does treatment cost?

The cost of treatment at Houston Mental Health varies based on the level of care, the length of your stay, and your insurance coverage. Many patients find that their commercial insurance plan covers a significant portion of treatment, particularly for residential care and IOP levels. After verifying your benefits, our admissions team will provide a clear estimate of your expected out-of-pocket responsibility before you make any decisions.

What if my insurance denies coverage?

A coverage denial is not necessarily the final word. Our admissions and billing staff are experienced in submitting clinical appeals to insurance carriers, and many initial denials are successfully overturned with the right documentation. If your benefits fall short of covering the full cost of your recommended level of care, our team will work with you to explore all available options. Visit our Insurance page for a full overview of how we handle coverage challenges.

What does a typical day look like in residential treatment?

Residential patients at Houston Mental Health move through a structured daily schedule that includes individual therapy, group therapy sessions, specialized modality programming (art therapy, music therapy, yoga therapy, animal-assisted therapy, and meditation), meals prepared by our private chef, and periods of supported downtime. The schedule balances clinical intensity with the space for rest and reflection that sustained recovery also requires. For a detailed breakdown of the daily routine – and how it compares to our Virtual IOP and In-Person OP schedules – visit our Daily Life at Houston Mental Health page.

Is Houston Mental Health pet-friendly?

Yes. Houston Mental Health is a pet-friendly residential facility. If bringing a companion animal is important to your comfort and recovery, speak with your admissions specialist before arrival to discuss the specific logistics and policies involved. Animal-assisted therapy is also available as part of the clinical program for all patients, regardless of whether they have brought their own pet.

Can family members visit during residential treatment?

Family involvement is actively encouraged at Houston Mental Health when it supports the patient’s recovery. Family Therapy sessions are available as part of the residential program, and our clinical team provides guidance on how family members can be meaningfully involved based on each patient’s individual treatment plan. For more information about the family experience during treatment, visit our Family Resources page.

What happens at the end of residential treatment?

Discharge planning begins well before your final day in residential care. Your clinical team works with you to develop a concrete continuing care plan that may include a step-down to our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), a transition to In-Person Outpatient care, a connection with community-based providers, and enrollment in our alumni program. The goal is to ensure that the progress made during residential treatment is reinforced and built on – not left behind when you walk out the door. Visit our Alumni Program page to learn more about post-discharge support.

Is my inquiry to Houston Mental Health confidential?

Yes, completely. Every inquiry to Houston Mental Health – whether by phone, online form, or any other means – is handled with full confidentiality under HIPAA regulations. Your name, contact information, and anything you share about your situation or your loved one’s situation will not be disclosed to anyone without your explicit written consent. Confidentiality is not just a legal requirement for us – it is a foundational part of how we earn and maintain trust with everyone who reaches out.

Will my employer or anyone else be notified that I am seeking treatment?

No. Houston Mental Health does not contact employers, schools, or any third parties regarding a patient’s treatment without explicit written consent. Your health information is protected under HIPAA, and we take those protections seriously. If you have specific concerns about privacy in your situation – for example, if you are covered under an employer-sponsored insurance plan and are worried about disclosure – our admissions team can speak with you in detail about how benefits verification and billing work and what protections apply.
